It might be your webhost doesn't allow email to be sent from an address outside your domain. Such as your domain is yoursite.com, but your email is going to "someone@gmail.com".
Why not set up email addresses on your web hosting like "person@yoursite.com"?
Perhaps it's Gmail's end not Joomla that is the problem. Test with an email created on your domain name and see if the same thing happens.
